Beading Surfaces - Hints and Tips!
In another article that we wrote for this blog called Beading Ways dated July 20, 2006, we talked about what we used to bead our projects on which was something called a lap desk or bead bag table which sits comfortably on your lap therefore allowing you to sit almost anywhere or even watch tv while doing your beading projects. The surface of this lap desk is normally smooth and because of this smooth surface the beads can slide off the edge of the board or move very easily when you try to pick them up to count them, or try putting the needle through the opening of the beads or even if the board gets bumped or jarred the beads on the board can fall off or move around. This is something we have found ourselves doing as much beading as we do. There are so many things that can be used to contain those run away beads but we didn't want to give up our lap desk for beading, so we decided to try different materials on our board. We cut the material to the size of the bead board, used double back tape to secure it and then went on to see how it all worked and which ones we liked the best. We double backed taped ours onto the lap desk as we didn't want it to move off the board when we were done with it but if your using a kitchen table or other surfaces to bead on you don't need to cut the material or tape it. Things we tried were foam, a good piece of foam, a nice soft fluffy towel and a piece of an old blanket that is made of that nice and soft velux material. All worked really well and kept everything on the lap desk in its place! As with any craft everyone has their own way of doing things and what works for us might not work for you!
