Organizing Your Ribbon!

With Spring comes along spring cleaning and organizing, which it seems everyone is doing and with the weather outside just not quite warm enough yet to be outside this is the perfect time to get organized. The other day when I was putting away my beads and embellishments I came upon a box full of ribbon, very unorganized and some even right off the roll.

I wanted to share with you how I got my ribbon organized.

Supply List :

Metal Coat Hangers
Pliers
Tape

Take your pliers as shown and carefully untwist the metal coat hanger.
When its untwisted it will look like the coat hanger on the right.

Take the ribbon you want to organize and put them on the hanger
as shown in the picture on the left, filling the bottom of the hanger only.

When you have the bottom of the hanger filled, you now have to put
the hanger back together again. You can either carefully twist the hanger
together by hand or you can use your pliers as shown.

You now have your ribbon organized and in one place!
You can hang your ribbon in a closet or on the back of a door or anywhere
you choose to.

Tips :

To keep the ribbon from unrolling take a piece of scotch tape or masking

tape and put over the end of the ribbon on the roll.

On each coat hanger I filled with ribbon, I tried to keep the rolls about
the same size.

I also sorted out all the colors I had and kept the ribbon of the same color
on one hanger together so I know what I have.

One more hint is to take a piece of clear plastic and put it over your hanger, this
will keep the ribbon dust free while hanging in your closet or on the back of a door.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have any organizing hints and tips we would love to hear about them so that
we can include them here for everyone to enjoy!

Send them to us at : Customerservice

Daylight Saving Time - Clocks Ahead!

Daylight Saving Time starts 3 weeks early this year so don't forget
to set your clocks ahead tonight before you go to bed !

Besides loosing that one hours sleep which we all hate to miss,
being 3 weeks earlier this year can affect our computers if the
proper updates haven't been installed yet.

If you have the new Vista on your computer then you don't need
to do anything it will take care of itself. But if you run Windows XP
and older then you will have to download a patch from the Windows
Update page.

But if your settings for installing updates from Windows is set to
automatic then it should have been taken care of!

Daylight Saving Time Will end this year November 4, 2007!

~Happy Beading Everyone~

Using Hemp In Your Beading Projects - Bead Shak

In previous posts, we discussed other types of cording - today we would like share with you another type of cording that you can use for your beading projects!

The use of natural fiber cording or Hemp (twine, cord and yarn) as its popularly known seems to be making a come back and is being used in anything from beadie critters to bracelets, necklaces, and macramé projects. Hemp is a very durable cording, is available in a variety of weights, colors, and package sizes. It is extremely uniform, fray resistant, knots easily and it maintains it shape fairly well. Hemp also comes in natural, polished, and waxed.

This type of cording can be purchased in small quantities for that one time only project you may decide to do, all the way up to 200 foot spools which in the long run is more economical if you are going to do more projects over time. If you do decide to purchase the larger quantity of this type of cording it might be best to plan out what kinds of projects you might want to do as all weights and thickness of hemp won't do for all projects.

Here is a guideline for buying this kind of cording:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thin and Medium Twine, which is the natural, rougher feeling cording, is perfect for jewelry making, beading, beadies, candle wicking, and macramé. This twine is not waxed or polished but is in its natural state and may not be preferred by everyone especially for jewelry making.

Hemp Cord is polished and has a nice sheen to it and is used mostly for bracelets, necklaces, belts and some kinds of beading. Again, it's a preference on how and where you use this polished cording. If your doing a necklace or bracelet and don't want the rough texture of the twine then this is your best choice. This will give your project a more finished look as well.

Hemp yarn is mostly used for wearable hemp garments, woven, knit or crocheted is soft so it doesn't cause any itchiness like it would if you used the twine for this purpose. Also used for macramé jewelry. It washes up well, maintains it shape, and lasts forever.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bottom line for using this type of cording is personal preference, style of pattern, type of pattern, lots of imagination, and the most important thing of all is have fun doing it!

This is just a basic guideline to this type of cording as hemp is one of those cordings that can be used in a wide range of beading and craft projects, its natural state, or waxed and polished is definitely a personal preference. Try different types of hemp in your projects to see what kinds of effects you get and which one you like working with the best.
